AEA Opens 66th Annual Convention and Trade Show

Aircraft Electronics Association (AEA) president and CEO Mike Adamson kicked off the aviation trade group's 2023 convention today in Orlando, Florida, welcoming members that include avionics manufacturers, installation and repair centers, and service providers. More than 125 exhibitors are expected this week at the event, where attendees from more than 300 companies and organizations in 16 countries can take advantage of over 100 hours of regulatory, business, and technical training sessions.

At this morning’s new product introductions, more than 30 companies highlighted their latest avionics offerings.

AEA Announces Industry Award Winners

The FAA honored Aircraft Electronics Association (AEA) v-p of government and regulatory affairs Ric Peri with the Charles Taylor Master Mechanic award alongside the trade group's annual award winners today at the AEA Convention, which is being held this year in Orlando, Florida. Dewey Conroy was bestowed as AEA's member of the year while Avidyne was named associate member of the year.

Peri joined AEA in 2001 and since then has helped members with their questions and relations with regulators. Conroy, v-p and COO of Pacific Coast Avionics, has been a pilot since age 19 and started working in the avionics business in 1984. And Avidyne was founded in 1994 by Dan Schwinn and its product line includes GPS-based flight management systems, GPS navcoms, digital flight control systems, ADS-B transponders, and traffic advisory systems.

True Blue Power Adds Lithium Batteries for Light Aircraft

True Blue Power unveiled two main ship lithium-ion batteries designed for smaller general aviation aircraft today at the Aircraft Electronics Association Convention. This fills in the company's line of lithium batteries for all segments of aviation, from experimental aircraft to business jets and commercial and military aircraft. The batteries are available for 14- and 28-volt electrical systems.

Both new batteries retail for $2,499 and have on-condition maintenance and “intelligent cockpit communication via discrete output and RS-232,” and come with integral charge current limiting. Weight savings compared with lead-acid batteries is about 20 pounds; each battery weighs 10 pounds. The TB14 for 28-volt aircraft is a 13-amp-hour battery, while the 14-volt TB28-12V is a 26-amp-hour battery. True Blue Power plans to obtain supplemental type certification for the TB14 and TB28-12V in a variety of aircraft models.

Garmin Unveils PlaneSync Datalink for Managing Data

Garmin showcased the PlaneSync GDL 60 datalink at today’s new product introductions at the Aircraft Electronics Association Convention in Orlando, Florida. Designed to simplify sharing of aircraft data and make updating onboard databases easier, the PlaneSync connected aircraft management system is available now in new Garmin G3000-equipped aircraft such as Daher’s TBM 960 and Piper’s M600 SLS. It will also be available for retrofit.

PlaneSync is compatible with Garmin GTN Xi navigators, TXi flight displays, GI 275 electronic flight instruments, and certain Garmin integrated flight decks.

Mid-Continent 3-Pack Standby Package Goes Digital

Mid-Continent Instruments and Avionics has created a three-instrument standby package using its Flex two-inch digital instruments. The package replaces Mid-Continent’s mechanical-instrument 3-Pack and was introduced today at the Aircraft Electronics Association Convention in Orlando, Florida.

The Flex 3-Pack includes an attitude indicator, counter-drum encoding altimeter, and airspeed indicator—and all are available in NVIS-compatible versions. Installation approval is available under Mid-Continent’s approved model list supplemental type certificate covering more than 180 aircraft models, and installation is simplified because the Flex instruments fit in the existing two-inch panel hole.
